A Thyroid test in the body includes T4, T3, and TSH. Linked to molecules, T3 and T4 in the blood is synced to protein molecules. The unbound T3 and T4 represents the bodys thyroid levels. Thyroid levels of hormones that are free react with cell receptors.
Thyroid levels are low in hypothroidism. TSH thyroid levels are increased when the pituitary gland produces and releases more TSH than is needed. A Thyroid test is analyzed when the hypothalamus orders the pituitary to stop releasing TSH when in hyperthyroidism and TSH levels are low. Due to a six week blood to test result period, thyroid function or abnormal thyroid hormone levels may appear normal. For this reason, a FT4 and FT3 determination must be ran.
T3 is only produced in small amounts by the thyroid gland. In the liver, the majority of T3 present in the blood is made by conversion of T4 to T3.
