Butterflies / Spiders in Hawaii?

Fluffy asked:

I’m going with my sister for a vacation to Hawaii in 2 weeks and I’m wondering what kinda butterflies & Spiders exist in Oahu & Maui !

I am terrified of butterflies although I love nature. I plan on doing loads of eco tours, hiking etc.
What kind of butterflies am I likely to come across ?
&
Are they any big ?

the only ones we have in our country are normal sized ones which terrify the hell outta me…

just so I’m prepared !!

My sister is terrified of spiders, so throw in any info you may have about them too please :)

Am gonna try and take this experience as something to make me overcome my fear…. (which I honestly doubt will happen) but at least if I’m prepared, I can TRY not to shout and scream my head off when i see any….
and most of all… make people laugh !

If are you going to be doing eco tours and hiking, I’m sure you’ll run into butterflies and spiders while walking around. However, I don’t know exactly what type or how many you’ll run into.

Just keep in mind that you are bigger than the butterfly or the spider and that they are just as scared of you as you are of them……

    Good luck and happy travels!

Butterflies are normal size orange and black ones. There are no real poisonous spiders here. One of the most common is the yellow garden spider and the cane spider both are relatively harmless and dont bother you. Were not completely infested with spiders or butterflies so there’s nothing to worry about. All our insects & spiders are safer and less terrifying (in my opinion) than the insects & spiders in the mainland.

We have the beautiful Monarch Butterflies…they range from 1/2 in to 4ins in length. We also have the White Moths which are smaller, 1/2in.

As for spiders, we have very large, hairy, greyish, brown Sugar Cane spiders. And the usual variety that you will experience while hiking.

Take tonz of bug spray with ya….the mosquitos will **** YOUR BLOOD!!!
