You will find cooler beaches on the Northside of the island where the surfers go, and it's only a short drive to get there. I am not sure if there are many places to stay over there, but if there are, I would highly recommended it. Downtown Honolulu by the beach can get pretty dangerous at night, so don't go out alone.
