So i’m moving to Hawaii, i’m currently here on vacation and I love it here, so I’m gonna move here, I love everything about it here and plan to live here. So I am gonna live on the island of Oahu, where could I get a cheap apartment or house that I can rent? I know it’s expensive here but i’ve been here for 5 days and now I already have made several friends and everyone is so friendly. I like the different cultures, I love everything about this place. So any ideas on pretty cheap housing?

   There’s no such thing as cheap housing in Hawaii. I rent out a room in my apt for $600. . .and I live in the cheapest part of the island.

   Your best bet is to get on craigslist and advertise in the housing wanted section. State how much your willing to spend and then be flexible. Be careful though, cheap housing often means unsavory situations (even here, where people are generally very nice and wonderful).

   Also, consider transportation. We have an EXCELLENT bus system. Housing is way more affordable when you’re paying only $4 a day to get where you’re going. Rather than the costs of having a car.

   Expensive Areas to avoid:
   Hawaii Kai
   Waikiki
   Niu Valley

   Cheaper areas:
   Pearl City/Pearl Kai
   Kapolei/Makakilo
   Kaneohe/Kailua area
   some parts of the Chinatown area

   Look for a condo that the owner has for rent and also go to The University Of Hawaii and check their bullietin board, they have many listings for affordable. Also check with the dept. of housing to see of you qualify for any housing assistance. I think the best affordable housing on Oahu in Honolulu is the condo option, and then share it with a roommate or two. Housing in Hawaii can be very expensive but looking in the right places can make a huge difference. Best Wishes and Aloha! Enjoy living in Hawaii!

   I suggest that you start off in a room in a house in Manoa Valley. It’s a good starting point. And our public transportation (TheBus) is fantastic and will transport you from point A to B intact. If you want to go cheaper, head to one of the youth hostels in Waikiki. And follow the suggestions offered above (Craig’s List, Honolulu Advertiser, Honolulu Weekly).

   Find a cheap Hostel in Waikiki for couple weeks. Then meet the locals that can provide an inexspensive room. I found housing for $300 rooms to $500 studios in Hawaii. Somewhere in Kalihi, and Nuuanu Valley were reasonable, but you have to know a local or someone with connection. When you get a job in Hawaii, the people you work with always are the local will show their Aloha and help you find a reasonable housing.

   There are lots of people who do exactly what you’re doing: visit Hawaii and fall in love with it so much that they want to live here (I live on Kauai). May I strongly suggest that you do some research before you jump into living here? You obviously do not know much about the islands since you asked about “cheap” housing. There isn’t much of that available here! Homes cost much more than they do in most mainland states, so owners charge a premium to renters so they can cover their mortgages. Almost everything has to be shipped in here — most clothing, convenience foods, dairy items, furniture, etc., etc…so the cost of living here is much higher than most mainland states also. You will probably be able to do without heating or A/C for most or all of the year, but electricity costs here are ridiculous anyway.

   There are a LOT of pluses about living in Hawaii though! The weather is consistently good all year long (the only snow is on top of Mauna Kea on the Big Island), most people wear casual clothes such as T-shirts, surf shorts, and slippers (flip flops), crime is lower than all major cities on the mainland, people are friendlier in general, and unemployment is the lowest in the nation (2%). Activities are geared toward the outdoors because of the good weather and there is always something to do or something new to discover!

   Do a little research and see if you can make it here financially. If it seems feasible, go for it! There’s nowhere else I’d rather live.

   bob likes how people said kalihi and china town, they cheap there cause places like kpt and housing and **** is over there, but bob would rather be homeless on the east side then have a house in kalihi in china town, bob grew up in kpt and taht was the fucking pitts. bob is also assuming you are in wakiki, or the town area because of the enviorment you explained, but thats all just people selling out and fronting so more tourist come, when you come and live here for real it aint like that no more.

   east side is pretty good, but expensive. so basically you pay for the neighborhood you live in. the cheapest are gonna be areas near china town and kalihish cause thats where all the housing is and all the ***** heads. middle classish is east side, but fucking expenisve and then theres fancy areas lanikai, hawaii kai, dimond head which you basically gotta be rich to live there.

   bob would recomend look for apartments and rentals which are in middle class areas but are going for cheap, thats probboly the best cheapest deals you gonan get, but they scattered.

   Well , you can find cheap houses there in auction , check, could help you find great deals
