That is ridiculous. I have lived in Hawaii for over 35 years and I have never heard of “beat a marine day”. Someone has been watching to much television.

Oahu is great! You’ve gotten some good answers so far, but I just wanted to add that a LOT of servicemen and women try to get assigned to Hawaii, for obvious reasons (weather, scenery, etc.). I wouldn’t expect it to happen right away…if it happens at all.

We lived in Hawaii twice and never had any problems with locals. We went to a local church, went to local beaches, had friends from all over the place. I went on the bus every morning to work and I was the only white girl on the bus, the rest were Filipinos and locals. Never had a problem and in fact made some friends that I still talk to today. As long as you show respect to others, don’t mouth off or show attitude, you should not have any problems. It is no more dangerous there than it is in any other state or country you live in.

It would be untrue to say there is no military/local tension at all. But it is with only a very small sub set of the population, the young males who are under educated & under or unemployed. They often have a pretty big chip on their shoulders for anyone from the mainland. But you don’t run up against these folks on a regular basis. I’ve never heard of any organized things like “beat a marine day”. Considering that marines are pretty tough guys, that would seem like you’d really be asking for it to take one of them on. In any case “really dangerous” is a total misstatement. Some military kids have trouble in the local school system. I think the schools are one of the places where it is hardest for a malihini (newcomer) to fit in. I have worked with many military wives at my hospital & while a few **** it, most seem to like it here pretty well.

marines can easily kick the locals asses, easily. the jargon is ” we wish we could beat the highly trained Marines who can possibly kill us barehanded day” high racism against military and whites out there welcome to paradise!

When we spent two weeks in Hawaii, we never once met an unkind person! Everyone was very gracious in every aspect…. My husband went specifically to Honolulu for military training exercises (for which I tagged along) and it was a very pleasant experience.

The first thing I’d recommend before going is contacting the base ombudsman and possibly the Family Support Center on-base to get information about which neighborhoods would be best for you. I’m sure that Hawaii, just like any other state in the US, has it’s “good” spots and it’s “bad” ones; it’ll help to know which is which if/when you’re ready to move there.

I don’t know about all of that I do know it is expensive. Very!!!
