I’m not sure about the cost of living on Oahu, Hawaii, but here’s a cost of living calculator showing the cost of living in Honolulu as well as the median salary range for a Pharmacist there: The cost of living in Hawaii is definitely high – in Honolulu, the cost of housing is 153% above the national average. However, Pharmacists do earn fairly high salaries, even when first starting out. If you really love it there, it’s probably worth it to try it out, even if you end up only staying for a few years.

A nice 2 bedroom apartment in Waikiki or in the Ala Moana area will cost about $2500 a month. Most things cost a bit more in Hawaii, but we do have Walmarts and Costcos so there are ways to keep your costs down.

Are you interested in retail pharmacy or in a hospital setting? Walgreens will have a major expansion plan within the next few years so they’ll definitely be hiring. They only have one store on the island now but anticipate much, much, more to be built. There aren’t too many hospitals on the island, so might be a little tougher if you’re interested in that.

Employment outlook is good for pharmacists all over, but especially in Hawaii. For one thing, residents of Hawaii tend to live longer than residents of other climates. Secondly, older people often move to Hawaii for retirement, or live here half the year as “snowbirds”. The population of the US in general is getting older as the baby boom moves into retirement years. Older people get more prescriptions, so demand for pharmacists should go up.
